The Macerata Province

The Macerata province is situated in the centre-southern part of the region. Its capital, Macerata, is a town of over 40,000 inhabitants in the hilly hinterland of the region. Its historical town centre is on a hill itself.

Another important town in the province is Civitanova Marche, 25 Km. away from Macerata, on the Adriatic coast, renowned for its beaches and for its restaurants serving delicious seafood.

Things to do and see in Macerata:

- The entire town centre, that lies on a hill, is certainly worth a stroll through its streets and lanes.

- In the central square (Piazza della Libertà) houses the Loggia dei Mercanti, a Renaissance palace.

- The Palazzo dei Diamanti (Diamond Palace) is also well worth a visit.

- The Sferisterio is a neoclassical arena built in the 19th century. Every year in July and August the Sferisterio Opera Festival takes place here. The best opera artists showcase their talent in this arena which enjoys perfect acoustics.

Things to do and see in Civitanova:

- Certainly life in the summer revolves along the seaside so that's definitely worth a visit.

- The spectacular Palazzo Comunale (the townhall), built in the 19th century.

- The San Marone church, dedicated to the patron saint of the city, dates back to the Roman times but was rebuilt dring the 19th century.
